It's meant to hang so it can seem much bigger than your normal size so go down if you like. I would recommend this to all my apple girlies!! I just felt really good wearing this. For reference; I'm 50, 5'6, 295lbs and I bought the 3 but I'd go back and buy a 2 AND a 1 so I always have one! I grabbed this in black too.

I'm like 5 ft. nothing and depending on the style, cut and fabric of the dress I usually wear between a 1 or 2. Because of how it looked on the model and reading the other reviews I went with my usual size 1 (in the blush pink). Overall it fits well, comes to right about my knee, and is on the loose side which I actually really like with this style of dress. It fits with my bohemian alternative style and I've already paired it with my gold tone flower belt, gold jewelry, and my cream flat top brimmed hat (all from Torrid). I also paired it with my tan sandal pumps, but will also pair it with some cowboy adjacent booties into the fall season. I've washed and line dried it and had no issues there with the color fading or transferring when washing or wearing. I think in person it's slightly darker than photographed, but that could be because of the lights used. I love it and definitely would like this in a sage green or a pretty cyan blue. Going to enjoy this dress for a long time. My only advice would be if you want it slightly more form fitting size down.
